The planktonic stages of the salmon louse ( Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are tolerant of end-of-century p CO2 concentrations ArchiMer
Thompson, Cameron R.s.; Fields, David M.; Bjelland, Reidun M.; Chan, Vera Bin San; Durif, Caroline M.f.; Mount, Andrew; Runge, Jeffrey A.; Shema, Steven D.; Skiftesvik, Anne Berit; Browman, Howard I..
The copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is an obligate ectoparasite of salmonids. Salmon lice are major pests in salmon aquaculture and due to its economic impact Lepeoph- theirus salmonis is one of the most well studied species of marine parasite. However, there is limited understanding of how increased concentration of pCO2 associated with ocean acidification will impact host-parasite relationships. We investigated the effects of increased pCO2 on growth and metabolic rates in the planktonic stages, rearing L. salmonis from eggs to 12 days post hatch copepodids under three treatment levels: Control (416 matm), Mid (747 matm), and High (942 matm). The pCO2 treatment had a significant effect on oxygen consumption rate with the High treatment animals exhibiting...

A first genetic linkage map of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis : towards the identification of Bonamia resistance QTLs ArchiMer
Lallias, Delphine; Lapegue, Sylvie; Haley, Chris; Heurtebise, Serge; Boudry, Pierre; Beaumont, Andy.
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis is an endemic European oyster species, found on both Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Its aquacultural production has dramatically decreased due to two successive diseases caused by the intracellular parasites Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae. Since 1985, Ifremer has undertaken a breeding program to produce oyster families which are tolerant to Bonamia. In this context, the next step is to identify QTLs for resistance to this parasite. A genetic map is therefore being established as a basis for QTL work. The reference family is an F2 family produced by single pair mating of two oysters from the same F1 family. The F1 family was itself produced from a bi-parental cross between a wild oyster and an individual from the...

Biogeographical Patterns of Endolithic Infestation in an Invasive and an Indigenous Intertidal Marine Ecosystem Engineer ArchiMer
Ndhlovu, Aldwin; Mcquaid, Christopher D.; Nicastro, Katy; Marquet, Nathalie; Gektidis, Marcos; Monaco, Cristian; Zardi, Gerardo.
By altering the phenotypic properties of their hosts, endolithic parasites can modulate the engineering processes of marine ecosystem engineers. Here, we assessed the biogeographical patterns of species assemblages, prevalence and impact of endolithic parasitism in two mussel species that act as important ecosystem engineers in the southern African intertidal habitat, Perna perna and Mytilus galloprovincialis. We conducted large-scale surveys across three biogeographic regions along the South African coast: the subtropical east coast, dominated by the indigenous mussel, P. perna, the warm temperate south coast, where this species coexists with the invasive Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis, and the cool temperate west coast dominated by M....

First record of Marteilia sp in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis in Croatia ArchiMer
Zrncic, Snjevana; Le Roux, Frédérique; Oraic, Drazen; Sostaric, Branko; Berthe, Franck.
Marteiliosis is a disease of molluscs caused by Marteilia refringens in Europe and M. sydneyi in Australia. During routine examination of cultured mussels Mytilus galloprovinciallis in the northern Adriatic, the occurrence of Marteilia sp. was recorded with a prevalence of 5 %. This parasite was not detected in flat oysters reared in the same area. The affiliation of the detected parasite in M. galloprovinciallis was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a M. refringens probe, specific at the genus level. DNA of these infected mussels originating from the same area will be used to clarify the taxonomic position of this species within the genus Marteilia using a molecular approach.

Study of interactions between flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, and the parasite Bonamia ostreae using flow cytometry and suppression subtractrive hybridization (SSH) ArchiMer
Morga, Benjamin; Arzul, Isabelle; Faury, Nicole; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Chollet, Bruno; Renault, Tristan.
Bonamiosis due to the intrahaemocytic protistan parasite Bonamia ostreae is a European endemic disease affecting flat oysters Ostrea edulis. Control of bonamiosis requires a good knowledge of the parasite life cycle including host-parasite interactions. In this study, we investigated interactions between parasites and haemocytes by flow cytometry and Suppression Subtractive Hybridization (SSH). In both approaches, analyses were performed after 2 hours of contact between haemocytes and parasites purified from highly infected flat oysters. Flow cytometry analyses consisted in testing haemocyte activities including esterase activities, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and phagocytosis after contact with live parasites and parasites inactivated by...

Morga, Benjamin; Arzul, Isabelle; Chollet, Bruno; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan.
Bonamiosis is a disease affecting the flat oyster Ostrea edulis and caused by the protozoa parasite Bonamia ostreae, which is affiliated to the haplosporidia order and the cercozoa phylum. This parasite is mainly intracellular, infecting haemocytes, circulating cells playing an important role in the oyster's defence mechanisms. Even though the parasite's cycle has not been completely understood yet, direct infection from infected oysters to healthy oysters is possible. This leads us to think that there is no intermediary host in the cycle. Very little data on the parasite's infection mechanisms or the host's defence mechanisms is available. In order to better comprehend the Bonamia ostreae / host interaction, some flat oyster's haemocytes have been put in...
